So what is SEO exactly?
If you didn't already know, SEO stands for SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION.
So what does it REALLY mean? Well, in layman's terms, it is how the search engines like Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc find you and your website. The easier you are to be found the higher you are ranked.
So how do you get found? Great question! There are a whole slew of ways to be found. Algorithms that are used by the search engines that are changed frequently. Many that are so technical, that leave even the best SEO 'gurus' scratching their heads. You have to be an EXPERT to keep up with it all.
So, let's break it down into 2 categories to help you understand what this mystical SEO stuff is all about. We are going to use Google as the search engine of choice due largely ito the fact that they dominate the search engine traffic as seen in the photo below:
As you can see, 67% of the people using search engines, use Google.
The 2 categories that Google looks for are very simple and basic. They look at what is ON THE PAGE and what is OFF THE PAGE.
Let's break it down even further, shall we?
What does 'ON THE PAGE' mean? It means exactly what you think it means. It is what is ON your website page. The content, the pictures, the videos, the 'stuff' that is on your website.
Why is that important? Because Google looks to see if you are the authority on the subject that your website deals with. If you know what you are talking about. Google looks for relevant content to give to their searchers. For example, let's say you sell gift baskets on your website and the searcher types in 'gift baskets' in the Google search bar. Google is not going to bring up ladders . If they did that, no one would use Google to search things out.
Now in order to keep their searchers happy and coming back to use them for their searches, Google uses advanced algorithms to search out the most relevant, authoritative sites for the thing that their searchers are looking for.
What does all of this mean for you the business owner? It means that you need to set yourself up as an authority of your market. The more relevant, authoritative, and trustworthy you are, the higher Google ranks you.
Now what about what is OFF THE PAGE? I am glad you asked! This is where it gets a bit more complicated. But I will break it down as simply as possible.
Like what is 'on the page', the stuff 'off the page' is just as important to Google. This is where your trustworthiness comes in to play. The stuff 'off your page' is all of the back end work that is done 'behind the scenes'. And this is where a lot of sites miss the boat completely and find themselves back in no man's land, aka page 3, 4, or greater of the search engines.
The 'off the page' stuff is your citation listings, your back links, and anchor texts just to mention a few.
You can check out your own citation listings here. The back links are simply that. They are links coming from trustworthy sites linking BACK to your site. The anchor texts are the words that are located in another sites content that point back to your site.
